Stijn makes mixed media sculptures with mainly animal materials. An unconventional form of taxidermy. His entry consists of approximately 200 mummified plumed cockerels (young roosters) in cuboid form. Male chicks are a byproduct of the food industry. They do not lay eggs, they produce little meat, so they are superfluous and gassed soon after they hatch. This work is part of a series called #Geometry.

Stijn De Pourcq makes mixed media sculptures with mainly animal materials: skeletons, mummified animals, processed and unprocessed animal bodies, sometimes deformed. An unconventional form of taxidermy – also called ‘rogue taxidermy’. Sometimes sacred, sometimes beautiful and playful, at times macabre. Stijn sees beauty in death but at the same time keeps quite far away from the “beautifully stuffed animal”. Stijn grew up in and around Ronse. He then studied psychology and criminology in Ghent and now lives on the banks of the Leie in Drongen. For years, he worked as a circus artist, football juggler. In 2014 he made his first sculptural creation from puppet parts, electronic components, a wet preserved lamb’s heart, and part of a drilling machine.

This artwork is showcased at Subbacultcha’s Community Exhibition.
