Rio de Janeiro, a subjective reality

Last month Oriane travelled to Brazil. This photograph was shot in a taxi on the way to Botafogo. It was summer in Rio and it was warm that day, like any other day out there. Yet the atmosphere was different. A quiet moment in an ongoing city. Rio de Janeiro shot on film. This image describes Rio de Janeiro through Oriane’s vision. Seductive, intriguing, yet calming. The statue you see is Cristo de Redentor, which is another contradiction that Rio de Janeiro points out. Given that this place has the highest crime rate in Brazil, this statue, which represents world peace, overlooks the entire city. A tribute to the place that has stolen Oriane’s heart.

Oriane Verstraeten was triggered by photography at a very young age and has always felt an urge to document life from my perspective. Oriane wants to make shocking, realistic images that more accessible to a generation that – more than ever – tends towards a kind of escapism that takes the upper hand in our daily streetscape. On the one hand, this generation craves a dreamy and idyllic image with which to numb its eyes and thoughts. On the other hand, they also feel the need to keep their feet on the ground. Oriane her style is best described as a pure vision with a surreal dimension.
